2022 Year In Review

The year our son Avin was born. Greece, mountains, and both sides now.

December 18th. The World Cup Final — Argentina vs France. Our bet on Messi’s legacy. But our three-week-old son Avin made it impossible to focus on football.

“It’s probably best not to start out by asking ‘What am I seeking?’ Rather, it’s better to ask ‘Who would I be if I weren’t seeking anything?’” — Haruki Murakami

The Series of Miracles

From the first ultrasound through the first year, parenthood is not ordinary — it is a series of miracles disguised as routine. Labour, epidurals, the fragility of those early weeks: I would give everything for their health without hesitation.

Second Chances

Every child is hope made flesh. Avin brings life to everyone he meets. I hope he chooses, as John Green puts it, to fall in love with the world. Children are second chances — for parents and for the world.

Both Sides Now

Joni Mitchell wrote “Both Sides Now” at 23, re-recorded it at 32, and performed it again at 77. Each version carries a different weight. My son’s birth moved me to a different face of the mountain. I want to see both sides — with wonder.
